20 Cloud Computing Startups You Should Know

CMP Information Week
InformationWeek This Week - Monday, Sept. 22, 2008

Editor's Note

Clues In The Cloud

Startups offer more than new product options. They offer clues to where emerging technologies are headed. So whether you're buying or learning, there's something for you in this week's lead story, 20 Cloud Computing Startups You Should Know.

Earlier this year, we mapped out what eight established vendors including Amazon, Google, IBM, Microsoft, and others vendors are planning in cloud computing. This time, we dig into the newcomers. As InformationWeek editor John Foley puts it:

Why consider a startup when established players offer cloud services at seemingly lower risk? The cloud computing market is so broad--comprising software, server capacity, storage, middleware, virtualization, security, and management tools delivered as services--that even the biggest vendors can't excel at everything. Startups drive innovation and fill niches, often while pushing costs down and performance up.
Some of the most intriguing profiles for me zero into managing cloud services. RightScale, for example, is built on top of Amazon's Web services, aimed at helping companies better take advantage of the scalability that cloud computing promises. That's a product that IT teams could find useful--and it's a warning that they better be prepared for tricky management if they're considering the cloud.

Please share your comments on our articles and your own experiences with cloud computing.
