Today's Story Highlights

America's Vexing High-Tech Immigration Problem
Immigration is becoming as nettlesome to high-tech companies as it has
long been in the agriculture and construction businesses. Although
technology firms don't reach into the same labor pool as do ag
comglomerates or building contractors, their problems are converging.
The challenge, advocates of immigration reform say, is a lack of
government responsiveness to their need for brain power.

Scooping the Competition in the Digital Age
One of the books that had a big impact on me during my larval stage as a
journalist was Dan Rather's "The Camera Never Blinks." The memoir was of
Rather's experiences as a truly trailblazing and courageous TV reporter,
not Rather the lightning-rod anchor with the southern-fried election
night phraseology.

iTunes Ropes In All Four TV Nets for High-Def Downloads
The iTunes store has had various fits and coughs over the last few years
as content providers from the music, movie and television industry
battled it out with Apple over delivery and pricing quibbles. However,
the fall network TV season is now intact -- and in the full glory of
high definition.

Investing in a Greener Future: Consumers' True Colors
What a difference a few years make. Back when Al Gore ran for president
in 2000, experts and laypeople alike engaged in lively debates about
whether climate change was real or imagined. Two elections later --
after a mammoth public education effort by that same Al Gore -- most
people believe that the globe is indeed warming up. The problem remains
what to do about it.

Opinion: Cheer Up: There's a Silver Lining for Tech
Chipmaker Intel said this week that despite its record $10.2 billion in
revenue for the third quarter, the company is worried that the global
economic crisis will affect future performance. Despite such a general
malaise across the industry, however, there is some very good news on
the tech front.

Nokia Q3 Earnings Slide, Market Share Dips
Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia reported a 30 percent decrease in
third-quarter earnings and a 5 percent drop in sales on Thursday.
However, the company was able to improve gross margins at a time when
the global economy is faltering and spending on consumer electronics is
decreasing in the United States and in Western Europe, two of Nokia's
biggest markets.

Bleak Forecast Pours Cold Water on eBay's Q3 Profit News
Online auction house and retailer eBay announced a profitable third
quarter on Thursday but warned an already-volatile Wall Street that
continued weakness in consumer spending would hurt sales throughout the
rest of the year. The company reported Q3 earnings of $492.2 million,
compared to a loss of $935.6 million during the same period a year ago.

Virtualization, Cloud Computing Top Gartner's Tech Trends List
Gartner has released a list of the top 10 technologies that will
dominate the landscape for the next three years. The release comes at a
jittery time for technology stocks and early stage startups alike, with
all the major market indexes on a downward spiral. The list comes just
one day after the research firm cut its 2009 outlook on growth in IT
spending from 5.8 percent to 2.3 percent.

Android: The Good, the Bad and That Pesky Kill Switch
Google's first Android phone has finally made its way into long-waiting
hands. The T-Mobile G1 device, expected to be in stores within the
coming week, is drawing mixed reviews from early users. The closest
thing to a sweeping overview might be that it is a powerful device with
a few flaws but plenty of positives and potential, some of which isn't
yet achieved.
